Participants and Biographies
Professor Hyde-Price (UK) was educated at the Royal Hospital School, Ipswich He joined
the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages in April 2007 as Professor of
International Politics. His research area is International Security, particularly European security,
and he is currently engaged in an EUFP7 funded collaborative international research project
studying peace-building and conflict management. His research within the project is focused on
Europe and the Middle East. He teaches International Security at undergraduate and master’s levels,
and convenes the first year introductory module ‘International Relations and Global Politics’. At
Masters level, he contributes to modules on ‘Power and World Order’ and the ‘CFSP’. Professor
Hyde-Price formerly served as Head of Politics and International Relations at the University
of Leicester, and has previously taught at the Universities of Birmingham, Southampton and
Manchester. He has also been a Research Fellow on the International Security Programme at
the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), London. He graduated from the
University of Wales, Aberystwyth with a First Class Honours degree in Politics, and received
his PhD from the University of Kent. His research interests are diversified and has published
many important publicatiopns. He is a member of the advisory board of the Forum for Security
Studies at the Swedish National Defence College, and has been visiting Research Fellow at the
Stockholm Institute of International Affairs; the Department of Politics at Lund University;
the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Bonn; and the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, Bonn. Professor
Hyde-Price is on the editorial board of the journal Democratization.
Satish G Inamdar (India) is a retired Air Marshal was commissioned in the Indian Air Force,
in March, 1963. Basically a combat jet fighter pilot, he is also a Test Pilot. He has 4700 hours
of accident free flying experience on 28 different types of aircraft which also includes transport
aircraft and helicopters. At the point of his retirement from the IAF in Jan 2003, as an Air Mshl
at 59 years of age, he was the oldest serving air force officer to have carried out free-fall Para
Jumps from 13,000 ft. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, College of Defence
Management, College of Air Warfare and the National Defence College, he has served as Chief
Instructor at the first, at Wellington. He was on deputation to the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd
as a Test Pilot from 1974 to 1977and, later, also served a full term on its Board of Directors.
He also served as a flying instructor on deputation to the Iraqi Air Force in their Fighter Leader
School, for over two years, in 1983-85. Air Mshl Inamdar commanded a fighter squadron (No 7,
the ‘Battleaxes’), The Aircrew Examination Board (AEB) and a fighter base (Kalaikunda) and has
to his credit every major professional military career qualification besides holding a first-class M
Sc degree from Madras University and Fellowship of the Aeronautical Society of India. He has
successfully held all four crucial top-level IAF appointments for full terms, namely, Senior Air
Staff Officer (SASO) of Central Air Command; Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (DCAS); Air
Officer Commanding-in Chief (AOC-in-C) of Eastern Air Command and, finally, Vice Chief
of the Air Staff (VCAS). As the Deputy Chief, he headed the Govt of India’s Hawk Advanced
Jet Trainer Negotiations Committee and brought to a successful conclusion the extraordinarily
protracted AJT acquisition process which had eluded India and the British Aerospace for over
two decades. In his last appointment as the Vice Chief, he was primarily responsible for the
smooth, flawless and effective IAF build-up during ‘Op PARAKRAM’ on the Western front. He
has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM)
by the President of India in recognition of his ‘outstanding service of an exceptional order’.

of India, upon his retirement from the IAF in 2003. Presently, the Air Mshl is on the Executive
Council of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi, a member of the United
Service Institution.
Kazem Jalali (Iran) is a member of the Islamic Shoura Assembly of Iran (Iranian Islamic
Consultative Assembly).
Issam S. Jalham (Jordan) is a Professor of Industrial Engineering and currently is the Vice-
Dean of Graduate studies for Scientific & medical Faculties at the University of Jordan. His
research interest includes composite materials, biomaterials, Industrial Engineering (Management,
Planning, Economy), and Production & Manufacturing Engineering (Modeling, Prototyping).
He has published a lot of research papers and a book, supervised many graduate theses and
graduation projects, and participated in organizing many conferences. He also attended a training
course on “Materials characterization using nuclear ion beam accelerators with concentration
on PIXE, PIGE, RBS, and other techniques”, Organized by the Arab Atomic Energy Agency
(AAEA) in Beirut, Lebanon and participated in the workshop on Applications of Synchrotron
Radiations, organized by the SESAME Jordanian National Committee. In addition to his academic
experience, he participated in solving many industrial problems locally and regionally. He worked
as a consultant to the Specialized Training Institute for Metals Industry and headed the steel
standardization comities. He was also a member of the Jordanian Laboratories Accreditation
Comity for four years and a member of several comities at the University of Jordan. Moreover,
he is a member of many local and international societies.
Khalid Jabour (Jordan) currently serves as General Surgeon and head of the Emergency
Department at Zarqa Governmental Hospital. In the past, he worked as head of the Surgical
Department at Mafraq Governmental Hospital and as General Surgeon at Meade Medical
Outpatient Clinic. Dr. El-Jbour has also been involved in peace missions to Baghdad and to
Jenin (West Bank) as part of the Jordanian Field Hospital’s team. He holds a degree in General
Medicine from Rostock University, Germany, a specialty degree as a General Surgeon from the
Postgraduate Berlin Academy, and a PhD in General Surgery from Berlin Academy.
Tiffany Johnston (US) graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.A. in International
Relations and Spanish in 2009. Her area of research focuses on politics in the Middle East and Latin
America, with an emphasis on human security, sustainable development, and nuclear proliferation.
She is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the United States National Political Honor Society. In January
of 2009, she was involved in a study abroad program with the University of San Diego providing a
comparative analysis on the politics of immigration, terrorism, and arms control in Spain, Belgium,
France, and Morocco entitled “Europe and the Islamic World”. In May of 2009, she served as a
reporter and senior editor for the Energy Futures Symposium at the University of San Diego.
Mohammad Ali Jukhan (Jordan) is a Major in the Jordanian Armed Forces’ Royal Engineering
Corps/Chemical Support Unit. He is assigned as a chemical company commander and has
served manly roles in the Armed Forces in the past, including a post as a chemical staff officer
at the division level, and CBRN trainer and acting CBRN staff officer at the Royal Engineering
School. Major Jukhan has extensive experience with national institutions and agencies in fighting
CBRN threats and terrorist activities which endanger national stability. He has conducted CBRN
field exercises related to protection, detection, and mass casualties decontamination operations.
Major Jukhan served on UN peacekeeping missions in Ethiopia & Eritrea and Cote d’Ivoire. He
holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
Ali Karami (Iran) is the Head of the Research Center of Molecular Biology at Baqiyatallah
University of Medical Sciences, a position he has held since 2006. He conducts research on medical
biodefense through the improvement of education, prevention, treatment, decontamination,
threat reduction, threat assessments, and threat analysis. He has worked for more than twenty
years on issues related to BW and BTW. He has attended multiple BTWC expert meetings along
with state party meetings regarding biosecurity, biosafety, bioethics, and the ethical use of science
and technology. Not only does he take a keen interest in bioweapon nonproliferation activities at
the national, regional, and international levels, he also conducts national programs on preventing
the misuse of science and technology for WMD, specifically in regards to bioweapons and
bioterrorism. Dr. Karami obtained a B.A. with honors in Medical Lab Technology and a Master’s
degree in Medical Microbiology from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1984 and 1990
respectively. He received his Ph.D. from the Panume Institute at Copenhagen University in 1995;
after completing a thesis on the genetic characterization of borrelia burgdorferi (a Lyme Disease
Agent) and protection from it by the recombinant OspA vaccine, which was presented in the
International Congress of Lyme Disease in June 1996.
Ayman Khalil (Jordan) is the director of the Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS), a
position he has held since 2002. ACSIS is chaired by HRH Princess Aisha bin Al-Hussein and
operates in Jordan as well as various parts of the Middle East. It pursues specialized research
on WMD proliferation, cooperative security mechanisms, foreign policy analysis, legislative
infrastructure of disarmament treaties as well as other tracks. ACSIS is active in introducing
curriculums on security studies, produces a radio documentary on “security terms and
terminology” and liaise between military colleges in the Arab region. Dr. Khalil is a physicist
by training and holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Reading University (UK). He served
as chair of the National Initiative on Environmental Security, joined the United Nations for
five years, and was commissioned to lead a UN goodwill mission to Turkey and Cyprus in
1999. Known for his extensive relations throughout the MENA region with emphasis on GCC
countries, Dr. Khalil’s role was instrumental in concluding bilateral agreements with the League
of Arab States as well as establishing liaison offices for UN special programs in the Gulf region.
He is the editor of various books, and the author of many papers and articles, including “White
Paper on Jordanian Foreign Policy.”
Mohammad Khalili (Jordan) serves currently as senior specialist in occupational health and
safety for the Jordanian Ministry of Health. Dr. Khalili holds a number of advanced degrees
including an M.Sc, a Diploma in Child Health and an MD.
Jonathan Knight (UK) was educated in Berkshire, before moving to Scotland and earning a
Master of Arts degree (with Honours) in Politics and International Relations from Aberdeen
University. A former member of the Royal Air Force, he served in Northern Ireland before
leaving Her Majesty’s Forces to join the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Based in London, Jon
works in the Counter Proliferation Department and provided the policy lead on the team which
organised the London International Nuclear Fuel Cycle conference in March of this year.
Suk Chun Kwak (South Korea) is affiliated with Cornell University, a College Scholar focusing on
Near Eastern Studies and history. He has worked with the Korea International Cooperation Agency
in Jordan training volunteers, and is currently an intern at the Arab Institute for Security Studies.
