Meeting Announcment

2010 brought confidence and revived hope in nuclear non-proliferation efforts, the 8th session of the NPT Review Conference (REVCON) came to the important decision of convening a conference in 2012 on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction, a conference that will be sponsored by the UN as well as the three co-sponsors of the 1995 resolution, namely US, UK and Russia. Following a period of high hopes and great optimism of proceeding with arrangements to study the prospects of establishing a zone free from weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, the year 2012 brought an atmosphere of great pessimism and mistrust, the different statements issued by the three co-sponsors of the 1995 resolution (i.e. depository countries) clearly demonstrated the lack of consensus and the deep divide in political positions. Despite this setback, hope still exists. The mission of the facilitator is still ongoing, the UN Secretary General is still committed to implementing the outcomes of 2010 NPT review conference (revcon). 2014 is an important year, the Amman meeting is convened shortly before the 2015 NPT Revcon. The Amman meeting will witness a number of components and specialized events, including special discussion by the Arab Forum on Security and Nuclear Non-Proliferation, a workshop designated for journalists as well as others. 2014 Amman meeting hosts a number of events including the Amman Security Colloquium, the Nuclear Forum, the Arab Consortium Coordination meeting and a specialized Workshop for Journalists and Media Reporters
