Meeting Announcment
WMD & Security Forum - 2018 Session
With the US unilateral withdrawal from JCPOA, the Middle East takes the center stage once again. The Middle East also takes the center stage when it comes to nuclear disarmament debate. According to the chairman of the 2018 NPT prepcom who made his first public appearance in the Amman meeting in 2017, Polish Ambassador Bugajski indicated that the Middle East remains to be the central challenge facing the non-proliferation regime.
The Amman meeting seeks to attract commentary and opinions on key issues by intellectuals and scholars and is currently the only platform of its kind in the Middle East. The meeting focus is continuously evolving to cover many emerging issues. The meeting role goes beyond producing, accepting and presenting research papers. The Amman meeting is becoming a platform for dialogue, it also provides specialized training and builds awareness for young professionals and students. The neutral capacity of the Amman meeting provides it with leverage and a positive reputation.
The Middle East is facing a number of challenges, including the scarcity of natural resources, here the energy-water nexus plays an important role in formulating and shaping policies within the region. In fact, limited water and energy supplies are considered as the main driving force for many states in the region to pursue and acquire nuclear power programs for domestic purposes. Within this context, the Amman meeting devotes a significant portion of its effort to following and analyzing the status of different nuclear programs in the region.
Additionally, the region's nuclear energy market is witnessing serious developments, including the reported expansion of ROSATOM, the obstacle facing US-Saudi nuclear cooperation and most recently the inclusion of Jordan in the Nuclear Suppliers Group as the first Arab party to do so. All of the above are considered as hot topics followed and analyzed by the Amman meeting on Security and WMDs.
